5 Signs Your Pet Needs a New Carrier (And What to Look for Instead)
Is your pet's carrier still up to the job? Many pet owners don't realize their carrier is past its prime until it's too late. Here are the top 5 signs it's time for an upgrade — and what to look for in a new one.
1. 📦 Your Pet Has Outgrown It
Pets should be able to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably in their carrier. If your dog or cat looks cramped or can't move freely, it's time for a bigger size. A stressed pet during travel is never a good sign.
2. 💨 Poor Ventilation
Airflow is critical, especially during long trips or warmer months. If your carrier has few mesh panels or the ventilation feels stuffy, your pet is at risk of overheating. Look for carriers with multi-panel mesh ventilation on at least three sides.
3. 🔧 Broken Zippers, Clips, or Straps
A carrier is only as safe as its fastenings. Worn-out zippers or broken clips can open unexpectedly — a dangerous situation in busy airports or on the road. If you notice any damage, replace the carrier immediately.
4. 🧹 Difficult to Clean
Accidents happen. If your carrier's lining is stained, smells, or isn't machine washable, hygiene becomes a real issue. Modern carriers come with removable, washable liners — a must-have for any frequent traveler.
5. ✈️ It's Not Airline-Approved
Planning to fly with your pet? Most airlines have strict size requirements for in-cabin pet carriers. If your carrier doesn't meet the dimensions (typically under 18" x 11" x 11"), you may be denied boarding. Always check with your airline before travel.
